Infinite Hotel

Books/authors that I enjoy (no particular order): All the Stephen King books (the Dark Tower series lost me at points, but everything else I understood pretty well. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but ‘Long Walk’ is my favorite short story of his.) John Sanford’s ‘Prey’ series. Philip K. Dick. The ‘Dune’ series. John Douglas’ ‘Mindhunter’ books. Tolkien. Neil Gaiman. Chuck Palahniuk. Upton Sinclair’s ‘The Jungle’. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s works. Dan Brown. James Patterson. John Grisham. Scott Turow. Niven’s ‘Ringworld’ series. Chalker’s ‘Well World’ series. Donaldson’s ‘Thomas Covenant’ series. ‘When Rabbit Howls’. The ‘Harry Potter’ series.

Comics/cartoons I enjoy: Calvin and Hobbes. Dr. Strange. Swamp Thing. X-Men. Avengers. Spidey of course. Fantastic Four.

Games: Squad Leader was my favorite wargame (I haven’t played in years and no longer own it.) Scrabble. Cranium. Regular poker (I dislike hold-em.)

Fond memories from childhood: Wacky Packages. Famous Monster cards. Dallas Cowboy cards, the Staubach years. Wax lips. Reagan’s book store in Irving, Texas. Cicada noises in the summer. The Chateau theater. The sub shop next to the Chateau theater with a couple of great pinball machines. The chinese restaurant near the Chateau (Foo Wah’s, I think.) The walking trail across the creek behind the library across from the high school. Plymouth Park stores at Christmas time. Playing football in the street with my brother and cousin Arnold. The Cukjati’s who lived down the street and had a good card collection.

Shoes: For athletic, I prefer Nike’s. I wear a 13 EE which is almost impossible to find, so either your choices are severely limited or you end up ordering online. Reeboks are good as well, but again hard to find. I don’t mind dress shoes, I think they look classy. The difficult bit is finding a pair that is comfortable enough to wear for more than an hour.

Movies:  Enjoy all of Edward Norton’s. Most of DeNiro’s. Some of Pacino’s. Most of Johnny Depp’s. Meryl Streep. Sandra Bullock. Some of Tom Cruise. Robert Downey Jr. Amy Adams.

Found your blog after typing in, “Foo Wah, Irving, Texas”. I was wondering if anyone had written anything about it and it appears you’re the only one who has. I’ve often wondered about the owner, Stanley Chow….if he’s well and if he ever opened another restaurant.

You and I are probably about the same age; I remember all the things you spoke of. Went to Lively Elementary, Crockett Jr High and Irving High (1985). I’m still in the same location in Irving.

    Regards.

But, Irving has changed a great deal, I hasten to add. Some better…much worse.
